Between 2005 and 2009, Thomson Reuters indexed 26,529 papers that listed at least one author address in Hungary. Of those papers, the highest percentage appeared in journals classified under the heading of agricultural sciences, followed by mathematics. As the right-hand column shows, the impact (citations per paper) of agricultural-sciences papers featuring Hungary-based authors was 29% below the world average during the five-year period (2.14 cites per paper for Hungary versus the world mark of 3.01). By contrast, the impact of Hungarian authors was strong in space science (50% above the world mark), psychiatry/psychology (38% above), and pharmacology & toxicology (+28%). In computer science, Hungary’s impact happened to match the world score precisely: 1.70 cites per paper.
