Between 2003 and 2007, Thomson Reuters indexed 41,594 papers that listed at least one author address in Austria. Of those, the highest percentage appeared in journals classified under the heading of immunology, followed closely by clinical medicine. As the right-hand column shows, the citations-per-paper score for immunology papers from Austria was 6% above the world average (11.46 citations per paper for Austria, versus the world baseline of 10.78 citations). In all but two of the fields shown above, the impact of Austria-based researchers surpassed the world mark,
with notably strong performance in physics (67% above the world average), materials science (25% above), and mathematics (+24%.
