Between 2003 and 2007, Thomson Reuters indexed 361,575 papers that listed
at least one author address in Japan. Of those papers, the highest
percentage appeared in journals classified under the heading of physics,
followed by materials science. As the right-hand column indicates, the
relative citation impact of physics research was 1% above the world average
(3.98 citations per paper for Japan, versus 3.96 cites for the world).
Papers from Japan-based researchers also scored well in immunology (15%
above the world mark) and space science (+17%). In two fields, the impact
of Japanese research happened to match the world average precisely:
chemistry (4.81 cites per paper) and geosciences (3.79 cites).
