Between 2002 and 2006, Thomson Reuters indexed 106,958 papers that listed
at least one author address in India. Of those papers, the highest
percentage appeared in journals classified in the field of materials
science. As the right-hand column indicates, India's cites-per-paper
average in materials science for the five-year period was at 75% of the
world mark (or 25% below: 1.99 cites per paper for India versus the world
score of 2.64 cites). Although research in India has yet to attain the
world average in any of the main fields shown here, the nation's
relative-impact performance was comparatively strong not only in materials
science but in physics, engineering, and computer science..
