Between 2003 and 2007, Thomson Reuters indexed 116,199 papers that listed
at least one author address in Russia. Of those papers, the highest
percentage appeared in journals categorized in two fields: physics and
geosciences, where papers from Russia both account for 6.99% of the
database. As the right-hand column shows, the citations-per-paper (impact)
average for physics papers from Russia during 2003-07 was 20% below the
world impact figure for the field (3.17 citations per paper for Russia,
versus a world figure of 3.96 cites). Although the impact of Russian
research has yet to attain the world average in any of the fields shown,
the country demonstrated comparatively strong performance not only in
physics but in engineering, computer science, pharmacology, and economics
& business. .
