Between 2004 and 2008, Thomson Reuters indexed 214,709 papers that listed
at least one author address in Italy. Of those papers, the highest
percentage appeared in journals classified under the heading of space
science, followed by neurosciences & behavior and mathematics. As the
right-hand column shows, the citations-per-paper average for space-science
papers from Italy was 24% above the world average in the field (8.86 cites
per paper for Italy versus the world mark of 7.14 cites per paper). The
nation also performed strongly in physics (25% above the world mark),
clinical medicine (24% above), agricultural sciences (+21%), and materials
science (+17%).
